Skeptics in the Pub (SitP) is terug van weggeweest! Onder die naam worden al meer dan 20 jaar wereldwijd informele events georganiseerd waar kritische denkers in een aangename sfeer met elkaar van gedachten kunnen wisselen.
Tot een aantal jaren geleden waren er ook regelmatig in Vlaanderen Skeptics in the Pub events, en die draad pikken we nu opnieuw op met een lezing door Prof. Alexander Maxwell (Victoria University in Wellington, Nieuw-Zeeland) met aansluitende nabespreking “in the pub”.

Lezing
"Islam for Humanists: An Unbeliever's Introduction for other Unbelievers"
The talk provides an introduction to Islam for non-Muslims seeking a better understanding of an important world religion. It begins with the life of Muhammad and discusses his companions and successors. It explains how Ibadi and Shia traditions emerged from the first and second fitna. It introduces the Quran as a text, emphasizing the importance of the hadith traditions in Islamic law. It ends with a discussion of Islamic ethics and the concepts of Kafir, Takfir, and Jihad. There will be time for questions.
Spreker
Alexander Maxwell is associate professor of history at Victoria University in Wellington. He has written three books: "Choosing Slovakia," "Patriots Against Fashion," and "Everyday Nationalism in Hungary." He has published widely on nationalism, including articles about Kurdish nationalism and the 2011 Arab Spring. He teaches courses in German History, Soviet History, and the Modern Middle East.
